SAAVE can save student lives

On April 16, 2007 one student changed college history forever. He shot and killed 33 students mid-morning at Virginia Tech. Since the tragedy, campus safety has been a hot topic on college campuses, including MCLA's. Elizabeth McWhirk, resident advisor and president of Safety Advocates Against Violent Episodes (SAAVE), was one student who took the tragedy and used it as motivation to increase safety.

MCLA students skated, played basketball, and laughed at this year's March Madness. Michelle Hansen, Chris Kennedy and Mark Richards were in charge of putting the week of events together. "It is a tradition to do a Winter Week, and we looked at the calendar and picked a few weeks that had events already scheduled and we could build events around it," Richards said.

From my trip to the big apple, I've learned one very important lesson, how na've I am. From being accosted on the street and forking over 25 dollars to preconceptions proved false and all things First amendment. I'm glad to have come home though, as I'll always be a back country hick more than a cosmopolitan elite.
