The baseball team returned from Orlando, Florida, on March 22 and brought back a 3-6 record.
"It was a long trip - a very, very, very long trip," Coach Jeff Puleri said. "Sometimes they happen that way."
After arriving in Florida on March 13, the Trailblazers immediately started playing ball. The first two games were against SUNY Institute of Technology. The Blazers lost the first game 4-1, but won the second game 3-2.
In the first game, sophomore pitcher James Greenley pitched five innings, allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out six. SUNY-IT pitcher Brian Russell allowed one run in six innings.
MCLA's offense offered hope early, but failed to capitalize on a pair of walks and a pass ball in the first inning. In the second, senior Patrick Negrini hit an RBI-single to drive in freshman Joe Parillo, which was the only run of the game for the Blazers.
In the bottom of the third, SUNY-IT batters rocked Greenley for two runs on five singles, which was enough to win the game.
Junior Cory Burtman started the second game for the Blazers. He ran into control-related trouble in the first when he hit the first batter of the game that later advanced on a pass ball. Burtman then surrendered an RBI-single to SUNT-IT's Justin Marsden. Burtman allowed another single which set up a sacrifice fly to give SUNY-IT an early 2-0 lead.
Burtman pitched the next three innings with ease, allowing no hits.
The Blazers battled back in the second and third innings, scoring a run in each frame. Back-to-back doubles by Parillo and junior Matt Burke sparked the Blazer rally. With two outs in the following inning, Junior Steve Sullivan doubled-in junior Anthony Russo to tie the game.
The game remained tied until the sixth inning. SUNY-IT pitcher Ben Bushey yielded a lead-off walk to Sullivan. Sullivan stole second base during the following at-bat. Sophomore Tim Burns followed up with a go-ahead double and his second hit of the game.
